Jennifer Hughes

Jennifer Hughes is an actress, musician, and songwriter who, after a 12-year hiatus from theatre, returned to the stage in the spring of 2015 as Mrs. Drudge in The Real Inspector Hound (Westminster Fine Arts Series). From 1999 to 2003, Jennifer performed on several Des Moines stages, including playing the role of Fraulein Schneider in Cabaret (Des Moines Playhouse), Jenny in The Threepenny Opera (Drake University), Helena in A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream (Westminster Fine Arts Series) as well as one-half of the two-woman comedy Parallel Lives: The Kathy & Mo Show (Drama Workshop) with Kim Grimaldi. She is delighted to be working with Brian and Lisa Lynner again, having worked with them in several productions during that time, including Kin and Hearts of Freedom (Unexpected Company) and The Taming of the Shrew (Drama Workshop). In the summer of 2002, Jennifer played the role of Aunt Eller in Oklahoma! (Discoveryland! Tulsa, OK), and in 2003, the Iowa Motion Picture Association awarded her its “Best Actress in a Short Film” award for her role in Rick Amundson’s short film The Power of Love. Jennifer studied theatre arts and music at Drake University from 1999-2001 and is also a registered nurse. In recent years, Jennifer has also written songs and performed with her partner, Joel Kinser, in the Big Joe Kinser Band as a singer and occasional bass and fiddle player. She and Joel have a large blended family, with five children ranging in age from 26 to 4, and she is currently a stay-at-home, homeschooling mother to her two young daughters.
