Celebration Quotation – January 13, 2016

Today’s quote is from Hamlet:

"There's a divinity that shapes our ends, rough-hew them how we will." Hamlet, Act V; Scene 2

The actor in the photo (in case you didn’t know) is the great John Barrymore (1882-1942.) The Barrymore family is one of America’s greatest acting dynasties.  John Barrymore’s grandfather and parents were both stage actors; his siblings. Lionel and Ethel, appeared on stage and screen his children Diana and John Drew also became actors; as did his granddaughter Drew Barrymore.

Barrymore was a celebrated Shakespearean actor, and Hamlet was one of his most acclaimed roles  – his 1922 production was the longest running Broadway production of Hamlet (until John Gielgud beat his record in 1936.)  The photo is from the 1992 production.

Barrymore also had a very successful career as a film actor, although sadly, the only film of a Shakespeare play he appeared in was the 1936 production of Romeo and Juliet (he played Mercutio.)
