Celebration Quotation – January 30, 2016
Today’s quote is from Timon of Athens:
Timon is one of those “problem” plays that make it one of the least often produced in the canon – with unexplained plot developments, characters that seem to be there for no reason, and some rather clunky language, it feels a bit unpolished. But sometimes that kind of challenge it what makes the play so exciting to produce!
The image is from an 1875 engraving by William Sharp – a portrait of actor-manager John Philip Kemble in the role of Timon. Kemble came from one of Britain’s great theatrical families: his father Roger Kemble was also an actor-manager, and his siblings Sarah Siddons, Charles Kemble, Stephan Kemble, Anne Hatton, and Elizabeth Whitlock – also found success on the stage.
