Celebration Quotation – February 8, 2016

Today’s quote is from The Merchant of Venice:

"When he is best, he is little more than a man; and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast." The Merchant of Venice, Act I, Scene 2

The line – spoken by Portia in sizing up one of her suitors – doesn’t seem all that different from the way a woman today might dish to her girlfriend about a guy she had dated.

The image – a rendition of the scene in which this line appears – is credited to artist George Housman Thomas and was published in the mid- to late-19th century.
