Celebration Quotation – March 20, 2016

Happy First Day of Spring!  Today’s quote comes from a song in As You Like It:

"Sweet lovers love the spring." As You Like It, Act V, Scene 1

We love this wonderful watercolor of Touchstone and the young Pages singing together, hinted in the late 19th century by artist Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) – ann Irish illustrator best-known for his pen and ink illustrations of works by authors including Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and J.M. Barrie.

    • Thank you for your comment – this has been a fun and interesting project for us. We are Shakespeare “geeks” – but we also love history, particularly art history, and the Folger Library Collection has a fantastic collection of Shakespeare-related images to explore.

Theatre is ephemeral – actors have been performing Shakespeare for over 400 years, and so many have, “like chimney sweepers, come to dust” and have been all but forgotten. Through this project, we are rediscovering artists we only vaguely remember from our Theatre History classes in college. We are also discovering others we never heard of and knew nothing about. It’s an honor to be able to remind people of their legacy, for they are the ones who have helped keep Shakespeare alive for the world.
