Celebration Quotation – February 23, 2016
The photo is of American actress Maude Adams (1872-1953) as Juliet in an 1899 production of the play. Adams, whose mother was an actress, first appeared onstage at 9 months old. She acted throughout her childhood, making her Broadway debut at age 16. Through she appeared in many Shakespeare plays throughout her career, Adams achieved her greatest success in the role of Peter Pan, appearing in numerous productions of the J.M Barrie play in the early 1900’s. Her Peter Pan costume – which she helped to design – created the fashion trend known as the “Peter Pan collar.” In the latter part of her career, Adams became an acting teacher, serving as the head of the theatre department at Stephens College in Missouri, from 1937-1943.
One other fund little piece of trivia: Adams is thought to be the inspiration for the character of Elise McKenna in Richard Mathison’s novel Bid Time Return – dramatized in the 1980 film Somewhere in Time, which starred Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour.
