Celebration Quotation – January 16, 2016

Today’s quote is from Richard III – a line spoken by Richard’s mother, the Duchess of York:

"Why should calamity be full of words?" Richard III, IV.4:; illustration by Louis Boulanger

The image is an early 19th Century illustration of the play by French artist Louis Boulanger (1806-1867.)

Shakespeare may have misrepresented the character of Richard III in his play, as history shows that Richard was probably not the villain that Shakespeare’s character delights in being, but the Bard may have come closer in his depiction of Richard’s mother – Cecily Neville, Duchess of York – as a strong, intelligent woman.
